Implants

A dental implant is one option for replacing missing teeth. It replaces the root portion of the missing tooth or teeth. There are two types of implants: one that anchors to the top of the jaw bone, but under the gums, and another that fits into the jawbone similar to the root of a natural tooth.

Implants are beneficial, not only because they provide solid, non-mobile support for replacement teeth, but also because they can prevent bone loss associated with the loss of permanent teeth. Plus, they act and feel like natural teeth, unlike bridges or dentures. Implants provide a secure feeling because of the stable foundation they create upon which to bite, chew, and grind. Implants can be beneficial to those who have lost a single tooth, a few teeth, or a whole arch due to gum disease, cavities or trauma.

The gum tissue around dental implants need meticulous oral hygiene. Using a Sonicare toothbrush is an excellent way to help keep this gum tissue healthy, giving the implant a much greater chance of success.
